Barbering Instructional Video Project & AC1: Informing Ideas

Interpret the Brief

The Client for this work is Mark Sowerby, a Barbering Lecturer at Sunderland college and his requirements for us is to make a video about giving a haircut, the time for this video can be either 5-10 minutes long as this video does not want to be like a documentary. The target audience for this are 16-18 year olds because most of the audience will be learning students that want to learn how to give haircuts incase of a time where they can apply for a job. The types of examples to help me on this work would be what types of unique hairstyles there are, whats the equipment needed for this tutorial video, what the lifestyle of the haircuts and whats the main origin of the hairstyles. This Tutorial video must be educational for the students and it must include things that some would find educational like showing off whats needed and what to do like you are teaching a class.

The Requirements of this work will be to Plan, Edit and Film a Tutorial video of how to give a specific type of unique hair cut. The film must include free copyrighted music while in production along with a voice over for the tutorial video.

the deadline for this will be on the 24th of May 2021 and the Resubmission will be on the 14th of June 2021. Assessors of this work will be Drew Naylor, Emma Leslie-body and Neil Wilson.

The shots for this video must be static and be close to mise en scen while being filmed on a tripod. The production of this video will be recorded on campus due to Covid19 and no where else has to be filmed. A meeting with the client will be in order to discuss the production of the film and to talk about what the client wants for this video and what the main requirements are.

The client, that being Mark is barbering teacher that teaches level 2 to 3 students and he has tasked us to make a video for a barbering tutorial and needs to be around 5-10 mins long.

The things we need to do for the work for this will be stuff like Informing ideas meaning given evidence of existing work, an interpretation of the brief, a research of the barbering videos for inspiration, Using research to inform ideas, a mind map and evidence on the blog.

Identifying The Audience

The Audience for this product would be pupils aged 16-18 specifically ones that are studying barbering as this could help them while in their studying on their course. The Demographic for this would be the main age group of the audience which is 16-18 year olds along with what main gender the audience will most likely be, if we look into research we can see that 44% of barbering jobs are done by women and 36% is done by men which shows the audience will most likely be a joint collision of both genders, education wise will be college students as the main client is a teacher in a college teaching young college students about barbering.

How I will display my video is with detail so the audience can understand while watching the tutorial video, what may also appeal to them is that the terminology can be clear like how i can describe what equipment will be used like for example i can say that i used a Tripod to make sure the device i was going to use would stand up straight and not fall over or perhaps i can use a Canon Camera to film the recording while in production of the video.

The key topics of this tutorial video could be myself describing each of the techniques being used in the video as it progresses and this could last for how many seconds or minutes it needs to last along with how long the clip will be. Another key point is explaining equipment as that is very important to a tutorial video as it would not be very useful if the targeted audience would not know what equipment they could be needing in order to succeed their own style of hair. Yet another key point for this that the types of editing used which can be very beneficial for myself and the audience as they will possibly enjoy it with some editing put into it like how there could be a jump cut or a specific sound effect added.

The Finished tutorial will be viewed on YouTube as it will be recorded and then posted on the site where the link will be posted on my blog so others can view it instead of searching it up and making a hassle to find it. This Relates to the audiences needs because of the 16-18 year old's look at YouTube almost all the time which benefits the creators of the videos as their audience can simply click on the video and view it for themselves as this could be inspiring for the audience as they will possibly be making their own videos of the barbering for the future of their studies and course.

Video Examples

How this video used its codes and conventions was the different camera angles it used like for example how it was close up on the mixing of the ingredients and how it was made in the tutorial, other examples is the main settings of the video and how it took place in a kitchen which is practically like every cooking tutorial. The semiotics of this would be that the main symbol of this video would be there is a cheesecake on the thumbnail and it is the main aspect of the video, the index for this tutorial video would be cooking process of the video and it shows the main process of the cheesecake making along with subtitles saying what the ingredients are. The Icon for the video would be the cheesecake itself as it is the main focus of the video. The key features of this video would be the focus of the cake making itself and show how much it paces through the making which gives a nice reaction to the audience as well as the editing of the video as it shows pacing and editing such as subtitles and the jump cuts of the tutorial. How this video becomes effective is that how it appeals in editing as it shows how the editor/creator shows each step of the making of the video like how they mix the ingredients and how the subtitles show the ingredient to show the audience what they need to make such a delightful cake. The main downsides of this tutorial is that there is no voice over and only music in the back round and another thing is that they only show 1 thing you can have on the side.

How this video used its codes and conventions was the style of the video like the main setting was like how many cooking tutorials are, in a kitchen area with a lot of colour in them to show off a sense of style to the viewers/audience, What is also shown is the editing of the video as the creator/editor introduces us to his/her style of editing like showing subtitles of the ingredients and an image of a phone, basically telling the audience to subscribe to their channel to gain a bigger audience and to show off their skills in the coming future. The main semiotics would be that for the symbol would be the main product of the video that being the Oreo Mousse and the main thumbnail of the video being that, The index would be the main process of the making of the Oreo Mousse and how it is made along with the editing placed into the video and for the Icon it was basically the main finished product done. The Key features of this video was the editing and the main lighting as it shows both how much work was put into this video like how the editor shows off the subtitles of the ingredients and the main amount of the process, for the lighting it shows the brightness of the video and how it paces along to show that the audience can see it more clear as the video goes on. The main effectiveness that is shown in this video is that of how good the finished dish looks and how it is made in the process as Oreos are a popular food item and people will want to see somethings like this made, another effective way that this video appeals is that how the main ingredients are displayed and how well put out they are as the video progresses. The main downsides of this video would be that there is no voice over and how basically there is no sound of the creators voice and there is just music, another thing that there is only basic font and how it just seems so simple for a tutorial video and maybe a quick change would fix it right up, the types of camera angles used for this video are normally close up as its the creator of the video showing the ingredients being used and how the process is while the video progresses, another shot could be medium as it could show the finished product being done and displayed for the audience to see.

Evaluation of existing product analysis

The features that i will be including in this Tutorial video is inserting texts of what equipment will be in the footage along with a voice over telling the audience what it is. Another thing that will be included will be music in the background as most tutorial videos have and that will be some simple music that is possibly non copy righted or not. This video will possibly be 5-10 minutes long and maybe longer depending on the style of the haircut that will be done while in production. There are many types of editing that could possibly be done but i may just keep it simple and included regular sans font text while a voice over will be done to make sure it isn't just a tutorial with just music.

What references i have gathered together is that the camera angles are basically the same as the creators of the video have used their specific camera angles because they show the close up shots and medium shots in their video as it consists of them showing their products or the full structure of it in the video. Another type of reference i have gathered is that how effective the videos are because of how the audience has reacted to their video like how they show positivity in the comment section and how the like and dislike ratio is along with how the creator reacts to it. The final thing gathered is that how that neither of these videos have voice overs because either they didn't feel like speaking or just have subtitles in the option area and both of these videos have music in the background as the music goes on which shows how the creator and audience felt when listening to music as the video progressed.

What I have learned from this feedback is that some others can be very critical of people make and that's good when it comes to criticism because you can learn from it and get better at what you are practicing on or making a project on. What I have also learnt from the feedback I have received is that it can inspire someone to make their own video like a Barbering video like I am working on, along with coming up with ideas on the video might include and what it will be like when finally coming up with an idea. And the final thing i have learnt is that people have different likes and dislikes when it comes to different things like for example some like pacing of videos and some people like the main editing for the video which gives me a good option to choose which ones i can go for maybe the pacing or the editing or possibly both for the video.

What I think needs to be improved mainly is the pacing of the video as due to some feedback it was a bit fast paced and what would be the easiest option is to slow the pacing of the video along with the overall music in the background which should be added to make a more well designed video so that i can be more improved when it comes to making these types of videos such as tutorials which should be included with music and smooth pacing along with texts on the screen to guide the audience through the tutorial. What should also be improved should be the editing as during the video and when it was playing, it showed random cuts and that can be improved when doing the big production of the main tutorial video.

What I have learnt from this is that the main parts of the video I need to work on is my Pacing such as making the video longer than it was before nd include more footage. Next thing to learn from is the music as nearly every tutorial video has music in the background which adds an effect to the video to make more unique, another option to learn from is that the editing could use work as well such giving the video some text on screen maybe and add a few effects like a fade in and fade out. How all this can be applied is that I can earn these types of things I am learning from can be used as skills when i am doing my final piece and it can be easier to get it done while I am in production of the video, what can also be applied to help on my final piece is inspiration because I can simply learn from other videos on how they do their production when in making of it like what effects do they use and what effects and features were added into it.

How I edited: how I edited this video was with Adobe Premier Pro and it was where i mainly did all the editing. I used various tools to get this video completed for example the most useful one was the Ultra Key and how it was used was with the main logo displayed on the screen as i used it to crop out the white on the background of the picture of the Sunderland College Logo and how i dragged it to the side of the screen where it was like an advert to a barbering business which was a good idea for the main plot of this video. Another tool used was the cutting tool and how it included good cuts to other clips as the video was progressing like how on of the clips was about to finish but then it does a jump cut to another clip on the video. How I unlinked the sound of the original clips was by highlighting them and using the unlink tool to separate them from the clips which proved useful as I needed 0 background noise so i can insert the music clip so that it can move along while the video plays.

How I filmed: How this video was originally made was with a group of people filming various clips of someone getting their haircut by an actor, the haircut had to filmed fake but made to look like the person was getting their haircut otherwise it would look a bit odd if it wasn't looking real. there were various amounts of clips but some were chosen to be apart of the video as it would probably be too long when it was going to be edited and produced, the videos of the finished product would be at least 1 minute or more if so but my video lasted around 1 minute and 22 seconds as this would be the appropriate time for a small barbering video. The Gear we used to film the video was a Canon 120D as this was the main camera used for filming which there was a built in microphone in the camera because of other filming plus recording options for other videos recording using the camera, the lighting for the video was normal and used by the regular lights in the room, the types of equipment used was standard barbering tools like a comb, razor and scissors.
